Actually, I l...Corey, thanks for your nice writing. Actually, I liked the idea of Micro finance to help the poor who has almost no access to formal credit system. Grameen Bank (a Nobel Peace winning micro finance institution founded by Dr Mohammad Yunus) in Bangladesh is doing a great job providing loan to the poor without requiring collateral. However, it seemed to me 'Good Shepherd Microfinance' in Australia is also doing a similar job and offering loans to the poor at a lower interest rates. A criticism to Grameen Bank (GB) in Bangladesh is that GB charges a higher interest rate (though in real terms interests rate are not that high compared to commercial banks) though the borrowers of the GB are the shareholders and the owners of the Bank.
I feel very sorry for the Porirua family suffering from a 'third-tire lenders. It seems to me an introduction of Micro finance schemes in New Zealand could help to reduce financial exclusion and may reduce occurrence of such a tragic event of the family .

Akhtar
U of OtagoAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05973876491889601825noreply@blogger.com
